Do you use a bedroom that could use a ceiling fan to cool it down Its not difficult to install a ceiling fan yourself if you are planning to replace a light fixture. Because a ceiling fan requires the same electrical wiring as your light fixture, the only primary thing that needs to be done is to replace the workbox that can take on the weight of the ceiling fan. It can be very hazardous if you do not swap your current workbox to something that can handle the added weight of the ceiling fan. Just before you do anything, read the manuals for your fan very carefully and make sure that you have the necessary tools.

If you intend to have the fan on the cathedral ceiling, you will have to get an extension so the fan wont be so high up. Now that you are prepared for the exact installation, be sure that the breaker is put off, so no power is getting to the light you are changing. Remove the light fixture, and determine if the workbox that is already there can take on the extra weight. Most workboxes are not designed for ceiling fans, you will need additional support. Including support to the workbox is not that difficult if you have access to the light fixture from the attic.

To help extra support, you nail a 2x4 within the ceiling rafters where it hits the top of the workbox. Once the 2x4 is nicely anchored, attach the workbox to the 2x4. If everything is done properly, the weight of the fan will now be totally supported by the wood and the screws. In the event that you are unable to do it from the attic room or you have no attic, you will want to add a cross bracing in your ceiling. Doing this is much more of a challenge and may not be as reliable as using a 2x4 but it is the greatest you can do if you dont get access to the attic.

At this point, after constructing the fan based on the instructions, you are set to hang your new fan. The tough part is hooking up the wiring while retaining the fan. The problem is according to the type of fan you get, whether it is a draping frame or a fan that has a bracket with a J hook. For most fans the wall switch will turn the unit on or off, while the chain will control the speeds. If you prefer a light kit along with your fan, they can be manged by either chain or wall switch.

Now all you want to do is accomplish assembling the fan according to the directions, by connecting the fan blades. Right after you connect the blades, the only thing left is to flip the breaker back on to see if you did it right.
